Greed is patient. Or, it can be. It can lie in wait, with endless eyes, from every hole. It can sit still for as long as it needs to. When something gets close, it will have been waiting. She was called no name. Since birth, she was alone, wandering low with eyes like the world. Vast. Round. Familiar with the ground. She was one arm, always reaching. One stomach, always hungry. That's why she always came to the garden. It was always full. Baskets were packed with offerings for food, tinkets for company. For the longest time she waited to see who was coming to claim all these gifts. What an insult when she found out who they were for... 
Trees. The humans acted reverent towards them, leaving things. Building things. Meanwhile, here she was. Someone with one will, always waiting. Watching for some animal to creep close, for some food to roll loose. The trees waited, sure, but not for human things. Not for human food. She was here - she had been ready for years - but nothing they brought was for her, the living, starving thing. Everything they brought was for the trees. Trees that had no care, no need. And here she was, getting more familiar with their curves and holes. Here she was, waiting for something to get close. She was envious. She was ready. She was Wanting.
